Lovable makes a great first impression. You sign up, get free credits, type a prompt, and watch your app assemble — homepage first, then page after page. The smartest touch: while your first build runs, Lovable plays a tutorial with usage tips, so you learn the tool during the wait instead of staring at a spinner. It's a thoughtfully built onboarding, and genuinely fun to watch.

What it is

A full-stack AI app builder — not an autonomous agent.

Lovable is an AI app builder: describe what you want in plain English and it generates a working full-stack web app, written primarily in TypeScript. The backend is built in — Lovable Cloud (built on Supabase) covers your database, authentication, file storage, and secrets — and publishing is one click, with custom domains you can buy right inside the product. Connectors import data from tools you already use, and Figma import covers designers. What it isn't: an autonomous agent. There's no task loop — you write every prompt — so pair it with dictation or Claude via the official MCP server for higher-quality prompts. In our same-prompt test against Bolt.new and Replit at a similar price point, Lovable came out ahead.

The full-stack-plus-visual-editor combination. We built ActiveRivalry.com — an app where people stake money on physical challenges — with multi-tenant auth, personalized per-user data, and a Stripe secret managed cleanly, without opening the code once. When the AI's output isn't quite right, you don't re-prompt and pray: you click the element in the visual editor and change exactly that, or upload an image directly. The whole backend stays visible — you can inspect and query the database whenever you want. One knock: Lovable never shows which AI model is doing the work, and you can't choose it. The model they picked is clearly smart, but power users will miss the control. Pro tip: pull component inspiration from 21st.dev so your app doesn't look AI-generated.

IOS APPiOS app: built a small internal tool in ~5 prompts (Claude wrote the prompts, plan mode on) — came out exactly as intended. Only nit: preview needs a manual refresh after each change. Nearly everything works on mobile except viewing code files.

CLAUDE + MCPClaude + Lovable MCP: great for gap-finding and prompt quality. Two caveats: it can eat credits (make Claude show each prompt in chat for approval first), and it ignores plan mode — goes straight to build. Workaround: have Claude draft the prompt, paste it into Lovable yourself.

Plan mode first, even for small changes — let the AI study the codebase before building.

Almost everyone: founders, marketers, agencies, DIY entrepreneurs, anyone shipping an MVP without a dev team — Shopify integration even covers e-commerce. Non-developers get a true no-code experience; developers get full backend access, database queries, and GitHub export, and will push it even further. We now prefer it over WordPress for simple 5–15 page sites and CMS work. Who should skip it: only someone unwilling to pay a monthly subscription, or who doesn't want to prompt at all and would rather hand the work off entirely.
